Bill Gates is an American business magnate and computer programmer, co-founder of Microsoft’s largest PC software company. Since the formation of the company in 1975, Gates has worked on several positions including President, CEO and Chief Software Architect. One of the most famous entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution, he has been ranked among the world’s richest people starting from 1987. Born as the son of a successful lawyer, Bill Gates was encouraged to be less competitive. Bright and curious, he developed an interest in the computer while staying in school and wrote his first computer program as a young teen.

In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen collaborated with Microsoft (which was initially called Micro-Soft). In the beginning, he adapted a popular programming language, BASIC, for use on microcomputers. This proved to be a success and he continued to develop programming language software for various systems.
In 1980, the couple was contacted by the International Business Machine (IBM) with an offer that Microsoft writes BASIC interpreter for IBM’s upcoming personal computer, IBM PC. Microsoft created the PC dos operating system which they gave to IBM for a one time fee of $ 50,000.
In the mid-1990s when Internet access spread to the world at a dangerous pace, Gates focused on Microsoft for the development of consumer and enterprise software solutions for the Internet. Windows CE operating system platforms and Microsoft Network were among the innovative solutions developed during this time.
In January 2000, Gates stepped in as Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, although he retained his position as president. He created a new position for the chief software architect for himself. Over the next few years, he gradually transferred his duties to others in Microsoft and started spending more time in philanthropic work. He stepped down as the President of Microsoft in February 2014, and currently works as a technology consultant to support the CEO Satya Nadella.

In 2002, Bill and Melinda Gates were benefitted from the Jefferson Award for the largest public service, to the disadvantaged.
Gates received the Bover Award for Business Leadership from the Franklin Institute in 2010 for the achievements of Microsoft and his philanthropic work.
Bill and Melinda Gates jointly received Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honor, in 2015 for their philanthropic activities in India.
