Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the founder of the Maratha empire in western India. He is considered one of the greatest warriors of his time and even today, the stories of his exploits are narrated as part of folklore. With its valor and great administrative skills.

 

 Shivaji carved an enclave from the dwindling Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. This eventually became the origin of the Maratha empire. Early life and family

Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1627 A.D. (Or 1630 A.D.) in Shivneri, near a hill fort near Puna. Shivaji’s father Shahaji Raje Bhosale was employed as an officer in the army of Sultan of Bijapur. Shivaji was brought under the care of his mother Jijabai and guardian Dadoji Konddev.

 

Shivaji’s mother Jijabai and his Guru Ramdas inspired them with great and patriotic ideas and inspired them in love towards religion and the motherland. Shivaji received military training and learned the art of government from Konddev. He organized several Marathi pahadi people into a fighting army and started raiding neighboring areas.

 

In 1640, he was married to Saibai.

 

Achievements

At that time, Chattrapati Shivaji was most famous for his bravery to challenge the powerful Mughal empire ruled by Aurangzeb. Though King Aurangzeb tried to capture all the forts and territories under Shivaji, but he could not achieve much success due to Shivaji’s clever leadership qualities and guerrilla tactics. But there was a temporary ban in Shivaji’s successful venture by Bahadur Hindu General Jai Singh sent by the emperor. 

 

 

 

After this, Shivaji decided to interact with the Mughal emperor and after that the history which is known in history is known from Shivaji’s Agra as a wonderful escape trip, where he was kept in prison by Aurangzeb. However, after this incident, Shivaji remained idle for some time; He rose again against the Mughals in 1670 with the battle of Sinhagad. Immediately after this victory, he was crowned as the King of Marathas on 6th June 1674. Under his dedicated rule, the small independent land ‘Hindvi Swaraj’ became a big state from north west India to the east.

Death and Legacy

Shivaji died at the age of 52 on 3 April 1680 after having suffered a battle of dysentery in Raigad fort. His 10-year-old son Rajaram had a dispute over succession after his death between his elder son Sambhaji and his third wife Soyarabai. Sambhaji discovered the young Rajaram and on June 20, 1680, himself ascended the throne. After the death of Shivaji, the Mughal-Maratha struggle continued and there was a great decline in Maratha glory. However, it was recovered by the young Madhavrao Peshwa who achieved Maratha glory and established his right over North India.
